I LOVE Ghugni Chaat.
In case you don’t know, Ghugni is one of the most beloved of Bengali snacks. It is a dish of curried whole-yellow peas. I simply love it.
Look it up.
There’s a ghugni chaat store where I go often, along with my friends, in order to have Ghugni.
A few months ago (before March of course), I was out having this delicious spicy chaat and the owner of the shop & I started talking to me. I contribute to his daughter’s athletic journey as she’s my sister’s age. And they’re very thankful for it. I am thankful to be able to help them in this tough time.
Anyways.
I kept listening to his stories.
And kept having Ghugni. “Give me a bit of black salt” I said.
He was telling me his story about how once he used to work for a tea garden and now he has this small store. How hard he’s worked to support his family. He was speaking different things.
And then he said to me:
“Son, you’re a good man so always remember one thing.”
I said: “What?”
He said (in broken English):
“Mo-ney loss, no loss. Reputation loss, very very loss!”
Don’t see the grammar, see the WISDOM.
Losing m0ney is something that you can recover, but losing reputation? Never!
And you know what?
I see people losing their reputation ALL the time.
How?
> When you have a lot of knowledge but you fail to influence your senior leadership team with your idea, your reputation is lost.
> When you get nervous before giving an important presentation in front of important people, your reputation is at stake.
> When you fail to deliver on your promise, your reputation is in the danger zone.
> When you lose your integrity, your reputation goes down the drain.
And what did our grandparents (and their grandparents) say?
“Takes a lifetime to build a reputation. Takes 5 seconds to lose it.”
Right!
Look at your life and see how you’re taking care of your reputation.
Reputation in your family.
Reputation in your team.
Reputation in the minds of your boss.
Reputation in your community.
Reputation in your social circle.
Reputation in the eyes of your neighbors.
It’s your personal branding.
It’s what people think about you.
It’s people’s respect for you (or lack of it).
Remember as the delicious ghugni chaat maker told me:
“Mo-ney loss, no loss. Reputation loss, very very loss!”
